How to compress images without losing useful quality

A practical way to reduce web-image weight by fixing dimensions first, choosing the right output format and judging quality at the size users will actually see.

Good image compression is not about chasing the lowest file size. The useful target is a file that is small enough for the page while still looking clean at the size a visitor will actually see.

The biggest mistake is often compressing an image that is still far larger than the layout requires. A 4,000-pixel photograph shown at roughly 1,200 pixels carries detail the browser must download even though the page never displays it.

Start with dimensions, not the quality slider

Judge compression at realistic viewing size

Do not evaluate an export only by the numeric quality percentage. Open the result at the size it will actually appear. Look closely at text, faces, sharp edges, gradients and areas with fine detail. If artifacts are obvious, increase quality slightly; if the file is still unnecessarily large, reduce dimensions or quality in small steps.
